This is just getting started on the ledges. One has to watch carefully for cairns and markings - it is easy to get misled nd have to backtrack. The ledges require hands and feet and are challenging in good weather. If they are wet, don't try. Go home and come back another day.

  • A small and relatively flat piece of the ledges.
  • OK, this is the cairn we saw from below after the first faux-summit. Almost there?
  • Looking down from South Baldface.
  • Views like this make all the effort (beginning with making lunch and packing the night before and getting up and leaving the house in the dark) worthwhile.
  • From the summit of North Baldface, looking northeast to the trail to Eagle Crag. The descent just ahead (over the edge) is steep enough that one has to put away hiking poles and clamber down facing the rocks in places. No one would ever build stairs that steep - more like a ladder.

  • Mount Madison from the Madison Hut. About 40 degrees, brisk wind, making hat and gloves mandatory and wind pants a great idea.
  • Looking west from the small alpine meadow just below Madison hut.
  • And foliage season is just beginning. Ten days from now it will be soooo much more colorful.
